Very pretty and very remote.

In our minds one of the keys to a great angling experience is to fish in a really remote location. It's nice not having a lot of people around, and in general, remote locations make for better fishing. Guess what - our lodges are all really remote.

On the other hand, if you're out in the middle of nowhere and take a hook in the eye or have a stroke, you'd better have a really good plan in place to get help.

We learned a little more than a year ago about a company called Global Rescue that provides medical assistance and evacuation services everywhere in the world where we operate. If you are seriously ill or injured and are more than 160 miles from home, Global Rescue will advise and transport you to the hospital of your choice - free of charge. After doing our research, we decided that these service are so important that all of our guests should be covered.

Starting in January of 2010, all trips with Deneki Outdoors include Global Rescue coverage at no additional cost to our anglers. It's as simple as that - you're covered.

To learn more about Global Rescue, have a look here.

Fishing trips are all about good times, but a little peace of mind never hurts, does it?

Any of you out there who are interested in steelhead in the Northwest, particularly in the state of Washington, listen up.

We've been doing some work with our friends at Trout Unlimited and MoldyChum.com to provide the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife with information about how important wild steelhead are to anglers who fish in Washington. Starting right now, you can respond to a survey on MoldyChum.com about wild steelhead in Washington, and your vote will go straight to the WDFW. We think you should vote.

With that, here's more from the boys at Moldy Chum about the survey.

---

Tis the season to gear up for Winter steelheading. For us in Washington, it comes in two phases - the hatchery run followed by the wild run. And when Moldy Chum prioritizes its calendar weekends for the next six months, February, March, and April take pole position. It's not a priority fueled by quantity or percentages but rather one defined by experience. It is this experience that has incented Trout Unlimited and Moldy Chum to ask for your help.

We invite all Moldy Chum friends and followers to take 1 minute to answer this survey that asks how much anglers in Washington state value wild steelhead as opposed to hatchery-reared fish. The data gathered, non-scientific though it may be, will be provided to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“We’d like to find out just how important the experience of catching a wild steelhead is to the recreational angler in Washington,” said Rob Masonis, vice president of Western Conservation for TU. “From a conservation standpoint, we worry that hatchery fish are diluting wild stocks and reducing the hearty nature of steelhead in the Northwest. But we recognize the overall importance of steelhead to the recreational angler. I guess it boils down to a simple question: would you rather catch a wild fish or a hatchery fish?”

Charles and a different kind of BC West fun.
Photo: Alfi King

Today we present the second in our three-part series by Charles St. Pierre on his trip to BC West in August of 2009.

If you haven't read part one yet, you're going to want to start here.

On with the story!

---

The true Dean River “experience” encompasses a great deal more than world class steelhead fly fishing. The very tangible pulse and breath of this entire “Land of the Lost meets Glacial Rain Forest” landscape is seen, felt, and heard from everywhere and from everything. This is a place where the rain forest grows, both high and low, from and onto the shoulders of sheer solid rock. These same rock peaks, and the forest they nurture and protect, frame and tower over the entire river valley in multiple hues and textures of pale, grey slate and lush, thick green. They are immense in size, shape, and density and randomly define the horizon in every direction and seem to only reluctantly let portions of the sky itself into the valley below.

The nearby glacier and snowfields are mostly unseen from the banks of the river but the sight and sound of moving water is everywhere. While fishing the “Cottonwood” run on a lightly rainy morning, I stole a glance over my shoulder and up behind me and counted no fewer than 7 waterfalls cascading from heights of well over a thousand feet pouring themselves into the dense forest behind us. Ok, try this; close your eyes for a minute and imagine catching the hottest and most beautiful steelhead in the world in a place like Yosemite, Yellowstone, or Glacier National Parks, with only you and a small contingency of fly anglers having virtually the whole park to yourselves. Crowds here are not a problem; accidental tourists not included or allowed. Wait, it gets better…

Upon arriving at the airfield and left completely awestruck once again by the helicopter ride over the forest, mountains, and glaciers from Bella Coola and into the Dean River Delta via West Coast Helicopters, we unload and after a very short truck ride through the dense forest, we arrive at the BC West Lodge. After leaving the activities of the forest fires from the record setting heat wave of late July in the Bella Coola Valley behind us, the BC West Lodge, its guest cabins, and the surrounding grounds were both serene and welcoming, with the faintest sound of moving water somewhere not too distant beyond our lodge retreat.

We meet the staff that will be hosting us this week and are told lunch will be ready shortly and we begin to unload and distribute our gear. The four guest cabins sleep two with plenty of room for gear, clothes, firewood, and at least three bottles of scotch. I have the distinct feeling that the tongue and groove wood walls and floors found throughout the lodge complex probably came from the immediate forest that surrounds us, giving each cabin the warmth and feel of the fertility of the rainforest.

The shower and drying cabin is close by with thick cotton towels and plenty of room to hang wet jackets and waders. I was told that the food here was going to blow me away, but I wasn’t prepared for how good it really is. If you like multi-course meals of say, lamb shanks, risotto, and other gourmet fare, you’ll feel right at home here as well as your clothes tightening as the week progresses. Immediately after lunch today, we’re told, fishing will commence. No sooner are the chairs pushed away from the table than we begin to scramble to our cabins and begin “unpacking” like a group of small tornadoes blowing through a trailer park. In record time we’re ready. The BC West program here is totally unique and offers something that no other operation on the river does. Each guest at BC West will spend three days on the lower river (below the canyon) and three days fishing the water just above the canyon…

...To Be Continued.

In an attempt in not embarrassing myself in not remembering everyone’s names, I will not give a list of everyone who showed up. We had an estimated 25 guys (and one spouse!) came to fish the famous steelhead alley in Erie Pennsylvania over the weekend of October 30th to November 1st. A few members filtered in on Friday and braved the wind and the rain, but the majority of people showed up on Saturday morning.

We all met at the pavilion at Folly’s and planned our attack from there. Elk is about 50 yards away from the pavilion so it was the logical choice as the water was rising by the minute. A few headed down to the mouth of Elk to “beat the flows”. The fishing did not last very long as the creek visibly rose in front of our eyes. A few people got stuck on the wrong side of the stream and some of us watched in anticipation as they slowly crossed the creek. Those of us who were there then joined up the genius “beat the flow” guys and had a small window of fishing before the flows hit the mouth. Our early morning success was very limited as there were a few hookups and maybe 1 or 2 fish landed.

Cool scenery on the Palena

During the course of a trip with Chile West, anglers fish a variety of rivers and the Rio Palena or Palena River is just one of the many.

Flowing out from the east end of Argentina’s Vinter Lake, the Corcovado River makes a huge 180 degree turn northwest and crosses the border into Chile where the river changes its name to the Palena River. From the Argentine border, the Palena river meanders its way west some 120 miles before it reaches the Pacific Ocean.

Approximately 7 miles from the border, the river passes along the town of Palena. From here the road leaves the river and there are few access points until the river joins back up with the Careterra Austral at the Rio Frio confluence, some 40 miles downstream.

From the town of Palena and below, the river is classified as a class II – III with a low gradient as the river elevation at Palena is only around 650 feet. The average drop is about five and a half feet per mile over the 120 miles of river in Chile. Any real whitewater is above the town of Palena and into Argentina where the gradient is an average drop of around 25 feet per mile.

Working quality water slowly.
Photo: Trevor Covich

Characteristics of the river around Palena range from classic freestone runs, willow trees and farm land to dense forest, high canyon walls with waterfalls streaming down into the river. With little public access, floating the river is the most effective means of fishing.

The river is home to rainbow trout, brown trout, Chinook salmon and even an occasional brook trout. With a variety of insect life such as stoneflies, mayflies, caddis flies, midges and terrestrials such as the famous Cantaria beetle, the trout fishing methods vary from run to run - bangin’ the banks with streamers, swinging a bar, nymphing and dry fly fishing are all in play here. Every corner on this section of river offers something different from the fishing to the scenery, which is why we like it!

Sometimes it's hard to pick which super-cool Cameron Miller picture from Alaska West to post, just because we've got so darned many.

Today's edition is just a nice, normal, beautiful Alaska West rainbow trout underwater shot- heavily spotted, nice red stripe, and with a very run-of-the-mill fly in its mouth. Wait a second - that's not a run-of-the-mill fly - it's a giant floating mouse pattern! That angler must have had some fun.

http://www.paflyfish.com/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=111 Czech Nymphing - Doing it Euro Style http://www.paflyfish.com/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=111
Czech Nymphing has been discussed for a while, but recently brought to my attention by Ken Sperry over at Fly Fishing Reporter about this European style of fly fishing. The biggest difference in this method of nymphing is using up to four nymphs 18" to 24" inches off a dropper rig. Very similar to the often used tandem dry fly and emerger rigs used here.

Presentation is very similar to our high sticking a nine foot rod with an an arm outstretched with a very short drift. Strike indicators are often a part of a set-up.

These weighted nymphs are tied with gammarus hooks, lead wires and traditional natural and synthetic materials. Imitations are based on freshwater scud, larvae or swanky coloring in size #10-#12 hooks. Local nymph imitations with some Czech style modifactions would work best. http://blog.thebaitbarn.com/2009/10/small-game-hunting-in-indiana-is-open.html Small Game Hunting in Indiana is Open http://blog.thebaitbarn.com/2009/10/small-game-hunting-in-indiana-is-open.html Small game hunting seasons open Nov. 6
Statewide small game seasons, a big deal to the many Hoosier hunters who enjoy days afield chasing rabbit, pheasant and quail, open on Nov. 6.
The statewide cottontail rabbit season is from Nov. 6 to Feb 15, 2010. At Atterbury, Blue Grass, Chinook, Crosley, Fairbanks Landing, Glendale, Hillenbrand, Hovey Lake, Jasper-Pulaski, Kankakee, Kingsbury, LaSalle, Minnehaha, Sugar Ridge, Splinter Ridge, Pigeon River, Tri-County, Wilbur Wright, Willow Slough, and Winamac fish and wildlife areas and Brookville, Hardy, Mississinewa, Monroe, Patoka, Roush and Salamonie lakes, the season opened Oct. 1 and closes Jan. 31, 2010. The statewide limit on rabbit is five per day. Possession limit is 10.

“Areas of the state that had significant flooding this past spring may see a decline in the local cottontail population, but most of the state should see improving numbers. Cottontail numbers should be as good or better than last year’s harvest of 196,633 rabbits,” said Budd Veverka, DNR farmland game research biologist.

Pheasant season takes place Nov. 6 to Dec. 20. The bag limit is two and the possession limit is four. Only male pheasants (cock) may be shot. Males are bright in color, while females are varying shades of light brown.
“Pheasant numbers remain low, but stable. I expect a similar harvest to that of last year’s 6,300 wild pheasants,” Veverka said.
Quail season is divided into two regions. North of Indiana 26, the season runs Nov. 6 to Dec. 20, and the limit is five per day. South of Indiana 26, it runs Nov. 6 to Jan. 15, 2010, and the limit is eight per day.
“Quail numbers remain low and continue to decline statewide," Veverka said. "Southwest Indiana, typically the best region for quail, has seen a significant decline in the quail population this year, according to both spring whistle counts and fall covey counts. I expect the harvest to be significantly lower this year than the 20,500 quail harvested in 2008.”
Small-game hunters must abide by hunter orange requirements when in the field. All small-game hunters must possess a valid hunting license. Pheasant and quail hunters must also possess a game bird habitat stamp.

When: This past weekend
Conditions: Chilly, calm, partly sunny
Flies used: Clousers
Species pursued: Sea-run cutthroat, resident silvers

Song of the day: "Creep," Stone Temple Pilots

"The beaches have been good for cutthroat lately."

"That's what I've been hearing. Sounds like I need to break away from my attempts to find a steelhead and head back to the salt."

Over the next few days, I contemplated that idea. And by mid-week, the insane workload cresting over my cubicle walls turned contemplation into decision.

I picked up the phone and a familiar voice answered.

"So I've been thinking about what we talked about."

He laughed.

A few minutes later, I had a general plan laid out.

It was time to head back to the beach.

The first beach, an unlikely spot to find cutthroat, was surprisingly productive. Too bad my ability to keep them buttoned failed miserably.

Figuring I'd outworn my welcome, I moved to my list of usual suspects.

I didn't find any giants, but what I did find was a familiar sense of satisfaction. For whatever reason, cutthroat caught in the fall seem to be much more vibrant than those caught during any other time of the year and landing some this weekend reminded me of why I look forward to this season.

One of the few things that make the rain and cold bearable!

They may lack size, but they make up for it in beauty!

A sign of things to come...

It never ceases to amaze me how many of these critters cling to cutthroat.

A reward for making one more cast. :)

Let’s chat a little about fishing over the next few weeks. This is the time when fall turns to winter for good. In Southern Colorado along the Arkansas we can expect about 4 more weeks of good fishing during good stretches of weather. Intermittent snow storms will pass through leaving large amounts in the high country and smaller ones along the lower river. The water around Leadville is already very slow with cold evening temperatures. You can expect to see some beautiful days from Salida to Canon City through Thanksgiving. If lows are in the low teens, expect the following day to be marginal with fish hugging the bottom of deeper pools and runs, especially as they finish spawning and need to rest. Males will chase streamers over the next month, so come prepared for that. I love the Gray Ghost pattern during November. Also Woolly Buggers, Spruce Flies, and Squirrel Streamers will do the trick in natural, olive and orange. The South Platte will continue to fish well probably all winter. Brown trout spawning is in full bloom and closer to the end than the beginning. Some of the large post spawn fish will more than likely stay in the river all winter. Then they will resort to eating midge larva. I still like to fish them behind an orange egg pattern or a pink San Juan Worm. So fishing is still about and the weather is still agreeable for the most part. For those of us who fish all winter, there is no end to the season......we just look like the Michelin Man on the water.

Things are changing a bit with our long standing Alaska business. Taylor has resigned from Clearwater Lodge in Bristol Bay. Royal Gorge Anglers is no longer associated with Alaska's Clearwater Lodge, Lake Marie Lodge or To Toy Lon Lodge. Taylor is now the owner/operator of SoCO Guides, our guide service, and has taken a marvelous opportunity to represent the Wright & McGill Company of Denver for the Rocky Mountain Region. His new job with Wright & McGill will keep him on the road a lot, but he'll be working out of Canon City and will still be able to run the guide program and guide a lot himself. If you have been wanting to spend a day with Taylor on the Arkansas or South Platte, particularly for the Rainbow runs in the Spring, now's the time to contact us for a trip. His calendar for the South Platte in March will fill quickly. Next summer, he and I will host several trips to Alaska. These will be "turn key" trips and we'll take care of transportation, hotels and everything else once you reach Anchorage. The trip I'm very happy about will be on the Kvichak River at Blueberry Island Lodge. It's only a couple of miles downriver from Clearwater Lodge. Blueberry sits in the middle of the river on a long sweeping island and is owned by George Riddle and his wife. The fishing around the island itself is spectacular. George is a wonderful guide and person and has been on the Kvichak since the 70s. We'll take a maximum of six people there twice during the season, one in the fall for trout and one in July for Sockeye. Taylor will guide these trips along with George and another of Taylor's crew from this year. This is a close knit little lodge and you'll feel like you are sitting around you own dinner table at night. Price will be $3200.00 per person plus airfare to anchorage and from Anchorage to Iguigig. Taylor will arrange charter from Anchorage and he can get great prices due to his relationships with the charter companies. We'll also host a Trip to Rainbow Point Lodge on the Copper River at Lake Illiamna. The exact week and exact price will be posted on our web site in the very near future. It will likely be a week during prime Rainbow season as well. Rainbow Point is a small luxury lodge with fly outs and floats. The price on this trip will likely be around $7000 per person, but we’re trying to see what we can finalize that may be a little better than that. So, you’ll see Taylor’s face around here a lot more when you come in the shop and I am ecstatic about that. There is nothing better in the world than having your son take over where you leave off. Jan and I have worked very hard for twenty years in this business and we are delighted that Taylor wanted to join us in giving you even better service in the future. We’ll still be here of course……where else would we want to be? Taylor will provide some much needed help and a spark of youth that we all can use every now and then. Things are good around Royal Gorge Anglers.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) is currently planning to rework the laws governing permit (Trachinotus falcatus). Many of you might be unaware that permit are still fished commercially in the state of Florida. Equally alarming, permit are still pursued with spearfishing tackle in federal water (just offshore).

Since there are no federal laws concerning the harvest of permit, it is literally open season out there. This is a great chance to protect the future of this species forever. The Key West and Lower Keys Fishing Guides Association supports the following law changes. We want the FWC to list permit as a gamefish, thus ending all commercial sale of the species. We also support mandating the permit fishery as catch and release only, with some provision (a stamp or tag system) for the keeping/harvest of one fish per day for those pursuing world records. Lastly, we want to see state regulations extended into federal waters to insure the success of these law changes.

A few minutes or your time could help protect these fish. Any comment in support of these law changes will go a long way. Seriously, public comment plays a very large role in the decision making/law making process.

Please, cut & paste and email a copy of the comments below to marine@myfwc.com or for those preferring more old fashioned methods, download/print and mail/fax the attachment to: Division of Marine Fisheries Management2590 Executive Ctr Circle E #201Tallahassee, FL 32301fax: 850 487-4847

Thank you very much for your time and please forward this request to all those anglers or industry people/friends that you feel would support such a proposal. Cut and paste the following below in bold, write your name at the end, enter "permit law changes" in the subject box to: marine@myfwc.com

FWC Commissioners,

In light of the proposed law changes for Permit (Trachinotus falcatus), I would like to voice my opinion. I support listing Permit as a gamefish, thus ending all commercial sale of the species. I support the creation of a catch and release fishery for the species, with some provision (stamp or tag) for possessing one a day. Lastly, I support the extension of State regulations into federal water to insure complete protection of the species. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
My name
Thank you for your support.

http://gamefishingfiji.blogspot.com/2009/10/no-caught-shark-allowed-matava-leading.html “No Caught Shark Allowed”: Matava leading the Shark Free Marina Initiative in Fiji http://gamefishingfiji.blogspot.com/2009/10/no-caught-shark-allowed-matava-leading.html

Matava and Bite Me Gamefishing Charters in Fiji are taking a leading role in the international shark conservation efforts, organizing Fiji to become the first country to fully participate in the Shark-Free Marina Initiative (SFMI).

The SFMI works with marinas, boaters and fishermen to develop policy designed to protect sharks as a vital component of the oceans health. The SFMI has a singular purpose, to reduce worldwide shark mortality. Working with marinas, fishermen and like minded non-profit groups, the Initiative forms community conscious policy and increase awareness of the need to encourage shark conservation.

Shark Free Marinas work with, not against, the recreational and commercial fishing community, in order to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy shark population for our oceans, and to contribute to their ongoing survival.

Matava, together with partners in Fiji, has helped many marinas and charter fishing boats become SFMI certified, and Fiji now has more certified Shark-Free Marinas than any other country in the world. Stuart Gow, Director of Matava, said that his team has been actively promoting the SFMI, and distributing information about the Initiative, with the long-term goal of making Fiji “the first country to be proud to announce itself as a ‘Shark-Free Marinas’ Country”.

See the map of current Shark-Free Marinas

The majority of shark species caught by recreational and sport anglers are currently listed by the IUCN as “Threatened” (or worse) and each year, half a million of these sharks are killed in the US alone. It is estimated that 70-100 million sharks are killed yearly worldwide.
