The Rio Rosselot is another favorite destination for Chile West as it is just minutes from Hotel Espacio y Tiempo, our home base in La Junta.

The Rio Rosselot is a short river in comparison to most; it is only 10 miles in length. The river is of a medium gradient with an elevation drop of 11 to 12 feet per mile on average with one good whitewater section of a class III to IV, depending on water levels.

It is a fairly large and deep river with little wading opportunities, and access is limited to the angler on foot so floating the river is the key to success.

A short five and half mile drive will bring you to the headwaters of the river which is the outflow of Lago Rosselot. Here there is a boat launch for accessing the lake or floating the river from bridge to bridge.

Floating the river, one finds the upper section above the rapids to run full, bank to bank, with huge submerged Coihue trees and boulders lining the banks, giving excellent cover to the browns and rainbows, and there are some nice ones! There is little to no water suitable for wading here -bangin’ the banks with big dries or streamers is the preferred method.

Approximately two miles from the put in is the big rapid. Here the rods are stowed and life vests donned before proceeding through the whitewater.

A little bit of adventure.
Photo: Chris Price

It’s all over in less time than it takes to strap everything down and put on the life vests but it’s better be safe than sorry. It’s a great little rush to break up the day's fishing!

Once through the rapid life vests are stowed and fishing proceeds.

From here down, the river begins to widen. There are a few small braids to float, bars to stop and swing streamers or nymph and big back eddies such as the “Maytag” where you can sometimes nymph fish for hours.

To top it all off, at the end of the float, anglers are just a two minute drive from the hotel where hot showers and cocktails are available. This is yet another reason we like the Rio Rosselot!

There are some parts of the fly fishing world where you live and die by your rain gear. You're in it every day, it's loaded down with gear, and bombproof durability and storage options are key. On the Kanektok and the Kenai and the Skagit, high-end fishing shells like the Simms G4 Pro Jacketare a great idea.

On the other hand, there are lots of places where it's really wise to bring a raincoat along, but you're not going to be wearing it most of the time. Here, you want great performance and breathability, but light weight, packability and a reasonable price tag are a little more important. Places like South Andros Island and maybe the Dean River in July come to mind. These are the situations in which we really like the Simms Gore-Tex Paclite Jacket.

It's made with actual high-quality Gore-Tex. It breathes really well, which is especially important during, say, a boat ride in the tropics. It packs down small and weighs almost nothing, but it's an actual honest-to-goodness high quality piece of rain gear.

When you need to have rain protection along (which is probably pretty much always) but the $479 shell is overkill, give the Paclite Jacket a try.

Gary's ready.

For many anglers starting off bonefishing, the hardest part isn't making long casts or fighting the fish - it's being set up properly to make a fast presentation when a shot presents itself. If you're fishing from the boat, keep these tips in mind so you're ready when you need to be.
  • Take off your shoes and make sure you're not stepping on your fly line. Many a shot has been blown by anglers who didn't realize they were standing on their fly line. Bare feet are critical, as is just paying attention to your stripped-off line.
  • Strip off an amount of line you can reasonably cast. Then pull off another strip or two. This will ensure that your cast doesn't fall short if you need to make a long shot. Be reasonable though - having too much line stripped off just increases your risk of tangles when shooting line.
  • Dump your line and then strip it back into the middle of the boat. If you simply strip line off your reel into a pile in the boat, your coils will be lying the wrong direction - as you lengthen your cast, coils will pull up from the bottom of the pile, again increasing your risk of tangles. Pull the line off your reel, make a long cast, and then strip the line back in. Now the coils will pull off the top of the pile, and you'll be much happier when shooting line.
  • Keep a rod length's worth of line outside your rod tip. You need to have enough line outside your tip that your rod is somewhat loaded when you start casting, but much more than a rod length can be hard to control when you're standing on the deck.
  • Hold your leader just above the fly. This will ensure that the fly drops smoothly when you start casting. Also the less contact your fly has with sunscreen, sweat and this morning's breakfast, the better - bonefish don't like scents that they're not used to.

No sandy footprints - nice.

Today we add to our list of universal fly fishing tips - rules that hold true no matter where in the world you're fishing.

We've told you about one way to keep your boat clean and your boatmates happy - by putting trash in the cooler. Today's tip is to clean off your boots (or your feet) every single time you get in a boat!

Tracking mud, sand and gravel around your boat doesn't help anybody. That stuff ruins fly lines, creates a mess for the captain to clean up, and can make the deck slippery.

Our method is really simple. Don't just step into the boat. Sit on the gunwale or the bow, slosh your feet around in the water, then lean back and swing your feet into the boat.

Easy!

He is the sole director of the International Fly Tyers Symposium. He designs flies for Raineys Flies, and had developed a tying material made from leather called Bugskin.

Questions

1 - Dave: Please tell me how and when you got started into fly-fishing.
Chuck: I started in Fly Fishing seriously when I attended college, Penn State, and took the George Harvey fly fishing course in the physical education dept. It was the first Credited course offered at any University and it changed my life.

2 - Dave: Tell me what inspired you to create the International Fly Tying Symposium and The Fly Fishing Show.
Chuck: A fly fishing club of volunteers had a fly fishing show in Southfield, Michigan, that I attended. It was such a long drive I thought I could start one where I owned two retail stores at Seven Springs Mt. Resort. That was my first event that started it all for me. Now, after twenty years later, I’ve done many shows, none near by, so I’m traveling even further today.

3 - Dave: What is your proudest accomplishment as a result of the shows?
Chuck: My proudest accomplishment as a result of the shows is to see unknown tiers get exposure and become famous because of their skill. The networking at the shows brings out talent that might have been stalled if they only demonstrate in their basement or garage.

4 - Dave: What has changed the most about fly tying over the past ten years.
Chuck: Fly Tying has changed because there are more and better materials than ever before, especially the synthetics. And there is, of course, so much to see and share over the web, which connects fly patterns and tiers all around the world.

5- Dave: Tell me what would be the most import advice to offer someone just getting started into fly tying?
Chuck: My advice is to take a class or befriend a good tier. Buy a ticket to one of my shows, too!

6 - Dave: What is your most memorable fly-fishing experience?
Chuck: My most memorable fly-fishing experience is landing a 100lb sailfish after half of my rod slid down the line and was finally put back, as the fish jumped and it slid back toward me. The Mate reached for the tip twisted it back to the butt, and I landed the fish.

7 - Dave: Tell me about your favorite fly-fishing location?
Chuck: My favorite fly-fishing location is-wait a minute-I’m not telling!

8 - Dave: Tell me what you think has been the biggest positive change for fly-fishing in Pennsylvania over the past five to ten years.
Chuck: In Pennsylvania the delayed harvest areas are a big boost to participation and allows spin fisherman to see how fly fisherman can catch and release fish.

9 - Dave: What would like to see happen to help improve fly-fishing in Pennsylvania.
Chuck: Pennsylvania should re-think their stocking policy. Larger fish are needed in certain waters, none in certain waters, and overall need float stocked by dedicated clubs and not all dumped at bridges.

10 - Dave: What final advice or tips do you have for those just getting started into the sport?
Chuck: To those getting started I would learn how to cast, and then practice. Get some help from a shop, instructor, or a show, of course.

11 - Dave: Where can everyone find you on the Internet?
Chuck: I prefer to speak directly with people, but my shows are on the web at www.flyfishingshow.com and www.internationalflytyingsymposium.com]]>

http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/UpdatesFromDenekiOutdoors/%7E3/Nlg-Yp5f0l0/steelhead-in-high-water-5-tips.html Steelhead in High Water - 5 Tips http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/UpdatesFromDenekiOutdoors/%7E3/Nlg-Yp5f0l0/steelhead-in-high-water-5-tips.html
Lots of steelhead get caught in water like this.

We've written in the past about how to approach steelhead fishing when the water is low. Today we've got the other end of the spectrum - here are 5 things to keep in mind when the water is high!
  1. Go fishing. Nobody ever caught a steelhead sitting at home on their couch. Don't give up just because you don't have 3 feet of visbility. The fish are still out there, just in different places. If the river's in flood stage and conditions are dangerous, be safe and stay away. Otherwise, get out there!
  2. Fish a short line. When the river's low, the best holding water for steelhead is often out in the middle of the river in the main current. When the river is high, they still prefer the same kind of water - only now, that water is often right up against the bank. Fish aren't going to fight massive flows in the middle of the runs when the water is up, so keep your line short and cover the juicy holding water that's now often 5 to 40 feet in front of you.
  3. Fish lighter tips. Contrary to what your intuition may tell you, you generally don't need to be too deep when the water is up. With less clarity and higher flows, steelhead feel safer in shallower, softer water. That means that dredging may put your fly beneath the fish. On the end of that short line that you're casting, fish a lighter sinktip. You may be surprised at what you find in not very much water.
  4. Fish big flies. Here's your chance to break out the giant Intruders! Those big profile flies were designed for conditions in which it takes a big fly to get the attention of the fish. Go big. The right colors will depend on the river that you're fishing, but in general, darker colors tend to be more visible in dirty water.
  5. Look for soft water. You already know that you should mostly be fishing a shorter line to stay out of the really heavy current. Steelhead like softer water when the level is up, so you should be on the lookout for it at all times. Maybe it's right up against the bank. Maybe it forms on the edge of a big current seam. Maybe you should think about checking out a big back eddy. Think like a fish - where are the comfortable holding spots when the main river has all that current? Fish there.

http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/fish/2009/11/12/back_in_time Back in time http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/fish/2009/11/12/back_in_time Where: The Beach
When: This past weekend
Conditions: Chilly, breezy, overcast, rainy
Flies used: Clousers
Species pursued: Sea-run cutthroat

Song of the day: "What's My Age Again?," Blink 182

The itch was getting unbearable--the prior weekend forced me to remain indoors, partially for health, but primarily due to blustery weather.

Ironically, chum weren't the focus while I bided my time tying flies, the wind howling through the alleyway, whistling as it raked across the windowpane.

Instead, I had cutthroat on the mind and as the weekend gave way to Monday, thoughts of catching a few more of them haunted me as the work week plugged by.

Mercifully, Friday came quickly and my plans would soon come to fruition.

There's been a beach of been meaning to get to for some time, a place I'd long since abandoned as my list of favorite spots grew and my focus shifted to other quarry. But cutthroat were the soup du jour and I knew of no better place to find them and to ease the suffering of having to go two weeks without wetting a line. :)

The following morning I crept along the shoreline, amazed at how the place had somehow escaped time's passing. Everything was exactly as I remembered it from years ago--the clear water, the impossible-to-fish high tide and, as if on cue, the jumping cutthroat.

When last I visited, I was in my 20's. Though that may not seem so long ago, the change from then to now is all too obvious. Somewhere along the way, I picked up more rods than I need, more lines than I can spool and more jackets and waders than I can wear. To justify all this, of course, I developed some skill and acquired experience, or so I thought.

Back then, things were much simpler--a floating line, some poorly tied flies and a 5 weight was all I needed to play the game.

I wondered when the fun in that had given way to everything else.

The real question was if I'd get it back today; if the beach would be as generous as it had been when the focus was on the important things.

A response was quickly issued. A few minutes after the jumper, I was into a fish. The little trout came in, kicking and screaming as it were.

Soon after, Don hooked a nicer cutthroat and periodically, as we covered teh beach, the fish would remind us of their presence, jumping here and boiling there.

For all intents and purposes, life was good.

Though the action wasn't necessarily on fire, it was consistent, and whether it was the fact that being back here had put me in an especially good mood or that I was catching up on lost fishing time, I was having a ball.

It was almost like going back in time. :)

http://www.alamoflyfishers.org/node/1064 2009 AFF Christmas Party & Fundraiser http://www.alamoflyfishers.org/node/1064 by Rob Burlingame, AFF President

The end of the year is already upon us. Traditionally, the Alamo Fly Fishers gather for a Christmas Party to share food and fellowship, and celebrate the events of the past year. We get together to share memories and stories from the year, and prepare for activities of the coming year. It is a time for celebration, and it is a time for planning. The Christmas Party will also mean officer elections, and a change in club leadership that will start in January. We will sell raffle tickets and have some silent auction items for bidding to raise money for next year’s operating budgets. The party is a fun evening, and the whole family is invited. We will be continuing last year's exciting addition of door prizes and possibly a wonderful “grand” door prize! Make sure you are there to see what it is!

This year the AFF Christmas Party will be in the same spot as last year, in a large banquet room at Alamo Cafe Restaurant on Sunday evening December 13th. Alamo Cafe is located at 14250 U.S Highway 281 North. A social gathering for appetizers will begin at 6:00pm, and dinner is planned for 7:00pm. Dinner costs will be $15 per person, and everyone will have their choice of dinner plates from a special select menu. Soft drinks, tea, and coffee are also included. Other adult beverages will be available from the restaurant cash bar. Our party will occupy the combined Travis and Bowie banquet rooms at Alamo Café, and should provide plenty of space for all of the activities. We will have the projector and screen set up to show pictures of events and outings from the year. That should bring back some great memories, and get us thinking about outings for the upcoming year. If you have pictures from this year that you would like to share with us, please e-mail or call me (robburlingame@yahoo.com, cell 210.885.3730) or Todd Fleming (tfleming@bartlett-cocke.com, home 210.479.3062). We will also have some tables set up for raffle prizes and silent auction items. Raffle tickets are $5 per each or five tickets for $20. Dinner and raffle tickets can be purchased at the party. Please join us for an evening of food, fun, and fundraising. If you need a ride to the party, please call me on my cell at 210-885-3730 and I will be glad to coordinate drivers and riders.

Event Date/Time:

Mid 70’s and sunny…today was another beautiful day in south central Texas that left me wishing I was cruising the flats or wading the Hill Country instead of being stuck in “cube-ville” at the office. But as is typical with our weather, the next two days are forecast to be 15 degrees cooler and Noah-sized rainstorms! We have reached the transition in our seasons where each day’s weather is anyone’s guess…but if you get it right, you can have some of the most pleasant fishing conditions of the year! That was the trip I had a couple weekends ago. Two full days of full sun, great tidal movement and perfect temperatures. The winds were a bit heavy to start, but calmed to 5-10 mph in the late afternoons. It was a weekend made for fishing and as always, a learning experience to fine tune my fishing skills. That story, however, I will save for another time and page.

The experience I wanted to share happened on the ride down to the coast. I will pause to warn you that even on short drives, I often fall victim to random stimuli that invoke deep philosophical thought. OK, enough of the big words and back to the story. As I ventured southbound, my iPod was busy spitting out the remnants of a drawer full of CDs from the last 20 years. One long forgotten song came on and I had to turn it up. It was Aaron Tippen’s rendition of “You’ve Got to Stand for Something” from the early 90s. The song is a short remake of a classic Charley Pride song, but still holds a deep message about defining your values and staying true to them. The original version holds an even deeper message. I can’t help to remember that Charley Pride was one of the first black country artist, who debuted in the racially strained environment of the 1960s. In a recent interview about his experiences, he simply stated, “You’ve got to stand for something…and I stand for country music.” He lived the words of that song every day of his life.

You’re probably wondering how on earth this relates to fly fishing. I’m glad you asked! As a club and an angler, we have to stand for something, too. By Charley Pride’s example, that means we have to put our whole heart into whatever it is we are passionate about. A quick glance at the club home page reveals a condensed version of our club’s mission statement: “We are a service organization dedicated to the betterment of the sport of fly fishing through conservation and education.” Easy enough…sort of. Read that statement again and really think about what that means to you. What does service mean to you? How can we better the sport through conservation and education? We have a diverse club and just as much diversity in the organizations or causes pull at our heart strings. The key here is to solicit the help of the club and its members to help promote and support your cause. Think about some of the organizations or causes that you have learned about through other club members, maybe one you would not have otherwise known about.

We have done a great job as a club this year in supporting the fly fishing community and some of the larger groups that are out there. We have given donations, helped to sponsor a benefit tournament and provided volunteers to a number of events. Most of the club is aware of the great relationships that have been formed over the years with groups like Casting for Recovery, Project Healing Waters and Texas Parks & Wildlife that often produce visible and local evidence of our support. Some are tangible items like fish structures, stockings, hatcheries and events. Some of the results are even more valuable but less tangible, like smiles, tears, memories and heartfelt appreciation. These organizations have received mainstream recognition in our club, but we mustn’t forget those that sometimes seem to fade into the background. Let’s strive to make them mainstream as well.

http://www.alamoflyfishers.org/node/1057 Outings Outlook – November 2009 http://www.alamoflyfishers.org/node/1057 by Todd Fleming, AFF Outings Director – 2009

Congratulations are in order for the Alamo Fly Fishers. On October 10th, we won the team club competition at this year’s Redfish Rodeo. We were well represented, and a strong showing by Amancio Cantu, Doug Slick, and Steve Flanagan secured the club trophy. In the individual competition, Doug Slick came away with a trophy for the longest Slam – longest combination of redfish, speckled trout, and flounder caught on the fly. These were shining results on a tough day of fishing. Thank you to everyone who participated! We will need everyone back next year to defend our title!

The morning of the Redfish Rodeo started off in the low 60's, heavy cloud cover, winds about 15+ mph from the North, and a higher than normal water level. I found some fish early, deep into the flooded cordgrass. I spotted some redfish way back in some very small areas of water among the grass and mangroves. One redfish I saw was shadowing a stingray waiting for something to be spooked by the ray. It was very difficult to make a cast, and no doubt they new I was there. I had no real luck until the sun came out between 1:00 and 3:00 pm. Conditions during the day improved, and for a couple of hours after lunch the sun broke through, the winds subsided to about 10 mph and the water level dropped significantly on a strong outgoing tide. The falling water level brought fish streaming out of the grass, and the sun made spotting them much easier. I caught five redfish in a fairly short amount of time. No big fish, but it was fun to spot them, make the cast, and see them move on the fly and eat it. It is quite a thrill when it all goes right. My largest was a 21-1/2" redfish caught next to the grass line in about 6" of water.

I’m sure everyone has noticed the change of weather. We have finally begun to get some meaningful rain on a regular basis. It is amazing how quickly everything greened up after a few inches of rain. And oh my gosh, the air temperature now is so comfortable we don’t need mechanical cooling or heating. The last time I drove to the coast I had the natural ventilation blowing through my truck and thoroughly enjoyed smelling the many outdoor fragrances along the way. Cut grass and freshly plowed soil, or wood smoke from a distant fireplace is so distinctive and pleasing. It is great to get away from the city and out of our hermetically sealed manmade environment.

I’m very excited that our river and lake levels are starting to move in the opposite direction. I am encouraged that forecasts for a wetter than normal winter will continue to raise the extremely low lake levels from the past two years of drought. The increased flows of fresh water will have profound affects on all of our fisheries. Winter fishing for rainbow trout on the Guadalupe River, Spring fishing for white bass on the Colorado River, and even Summertime redfish at the coast will all be improved by more normal fresh water flows. I am the eternal optimist when it comes to fishing, but I am especially excited that the coming year can provide terrific fishing opportunities for us in every direction. The recent drought has been rough for fishing across the state, but I am confident fishing will rebound on this change of weather and good times are in our future.

By working with landowners, state and local leaders, and other state organizations, Perkiomen Valley Trout Unlimited has had great of success in restoring key tributaries of the Perkiomen, through several miles of tree plantings, streambank restoration and structure, educating communities and landowners on best land management practices.

Now comprised of about 200 members the chapter is working hard to complete the major work of restoring stream banks and water quality. Water quality has already improved enough in the main branch that a noticeable difference has been recorded in the water quality of the Green Lane Reservoir.

The chapter has a fund raising raffle underway to support local Trout in the Class and stream restoration efforts. Details for the the raffle and prizes can be found on the Perkiomen Valley Trout Unlimited website.

Membership Meetings - Perkiomen Valley Trout Unlimited general Membership Meetings are held every 3rd Monday of the month between the months of September and May, starting at 7:30pm in the Upper Perkiomen Valley Free Library Community Room at the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library 350 Main Street Red Hill, PA 18076.

In an attempt in not embarrassing myself in not remembering everyone’s names, I will not give a list of everyone who showed up. We had an estimated 25 guys (and one spouse!) came to fish the famous steelhead alley in Erie Pennsylvania over the weekend of October 30th to November 1st. A few members filtered in on Friday and braved the wind and the rain, but the majority of people showed up on Saturday morning.

We all met at the pavilion at Folly’s and planned our attack from there. Elk is about 50 yards away from the pavilion so it was the logical choice as the water was rising by the minute. A few headed down to the mouth of Elk to “beat the flows”. The fishing did not last very long as the creek visibly rose in front of our eyes. A few people got stuck on the wrong side of the stream and some of us watched in anticipation as they slowly crossed the creek. Those of us who were there then joined up the genius “beat the flow” guys and had a small window of fishing before the flows hit the mouth. Our early morning success was very limited as there were a few hookups and maybe 1 or 2 fish landed.

Czech Nymphing has been discussed for a while, but recently brought to my attention by Ken Sperry over at Fly Fishing Reporter about this European style of fly fishing. The biggest difference in this method of nymphing is using up to four nymphs 18" to 24" inches off a dropper rig. Very similar to the often used tandem dry fly and emerger rigs used here.

Presentation is very similar to our high sticking a nine foot rod with an an arm outstretched with a very short drift. Strike indicators are often a part of a set-up.

These weighted nymphs are tied with gammarus hooks, lead wires and traditional natural and synthetic materials. Imitations are based on freshwater scud, larvae or swanky coloring in size #10-#12 hooks. Local nymph imitations with some Czech style modifactions would work best. The video below by Johan Klingberg demonstrates tying a proper Czech nymph.
